25th November 2015
Lord Mayor of Cork City, Councillor Chris O' Leary, recently launched the Purple Flag award for Cork City centre on Friday November 20th. The event which took place in the Cork Opera House saw the official adoption of this internationally recognised city centre award by Cork City. The Lord Mayor, in addition to Cork City Council Chief Executive Ann Doherty, and Gillian Keating, Chair of the City Centre Forum, welcomed the award and highlighted the collaboration of Cork City Centre stakeholders and traders in the successful achievement of this award standard.
The award which recognises Cork City as a ‘must-visit’ location will be beneficial as a marketing and promotional tool, placing Cork amongst a small number of cities to have achieved this standard. The application which involved a thorough assessment of Cork City’s evening and night time offering under the theme areas of Wellbeing, Movement, Appeal, Place and Policy is awarded to cities and towns that offer a well-managed, diverse, entertaining and enjoyable evening and night out to residents and visitors to the city.
The Cork City Purple Flag award application, which was initiated as an action via the Cork City Centre Forum, and led and funded by Cork Chamber, has included workshops, the undertaking of a comprehensive opinion survey, a Purple Flag award self–assessment and the completion and submission of a comprehensive application to the Purple Flag Academy. The independent Purple Flag Academy award assessment was the final step in concluding this application process and took place in August. The Award success was announced in October 2015.
