8th October 2015
Triskel is Jazz Arts Central this October Bank Holiday with a weekend brimming with major international Jazz names. Savina Yannatou, Peter Bernstein, Barry Guy, Ronan Guilfoyle, Colin Stetson, Sarah Neufeld and Phil Ware are just a few of the top rate musicians billed for the festival.
“At Triskel we are proud of our status as the year round venue for Jazz in Cork,” says Triskel Christchurch Artistic Director Tony Sheehan. “The Guinness Jazz Festival is a massive hit and we have serious contenders on our stage this year. Savina Yannatou performs with Barry Guy and Francesco Turrisi Saturday Night, all high end Jazz artists. Yannatou was one of the stellar performances of the Cork 2005 Guinness Jazz Festival, her return to Cork a decade on is a must see in this year’s festival.”
Friday night opens with Canadian duo Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld, solo instrumentalists on saxophone and violin. Neufeld is part of indie rock group Arcade Fire with whom Stetson is a touring member. Keeping it contemporary, Sunday night Triskel is all about Jazz fusion through the spacy riffs of Go Go Penguin, a Manchester band featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner. They are performing a double bill with 3G - the Guilfoyles, leading figures on the Irish Jazz scene.
“During the Guinness Jazz Festival we launch a very important residency - the Music Network Artist Residency,” says Sheehan. “Supported locally by Cork City Council this involves Phil Ware curating a series of five concerts featuring international Jazz musicians, the first of whom is New York Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein. An outreach element of the residency will provide mentorship for selected music students and educators by both Phil Ware and the featured musicians. This is a huge development for Jazz in Ireland, the first really significant effort to nurture Jazz musicianship in the emerging generations of performers.”
RTÉ ConTempo Quartet perform Saturday afternoon – an innovative jazz inspired programme of music from the Balkans, the first in their series of six lunchtime concerts at Triskel Christchurch running into 2016. Umbra share a double bill with Yannatou, Guy and Turrisi on Saturday night, the Dublin Jazz band features Chris Guilfoyle on Guitar, Chris Engel on Soprano Sax, Sam Comerford on Tenor Sax, Darragh O'Kelly on Keys, Barry Donohue on Bass and Matt Jacobson on Drums.
Late night concerts at Triskel TDC space to be announced.
