The New Digital Reality

What is “big data” and what does “data analytics” mean for your business? How will the EU’s new data protection and privacy regulations affect ecommerce businesses? How are we bringing the digital agenda to a local level and how are traditional businesses moving online? These are just come of the questions that will be answered by the expert speakers at an event organised by the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) at Cork Chamber, as part of the Startup Gathering activities on 7th October. The event entitled “The New Digital Reality” will outline some of the proposed changes to EU legislation as well as addressing the importance of big data and data analytics for companies of all sizes.

Speaking about the event, Katherine Fitzpatrick, EEN Manager at Cork Chamber said: “Creating a connected digital single market is one of the European Commission’s top ten priorities. Statistics show that only 1.7% of EU enterprises make full use of advanced digital technologies (including mobile internet, cloud computing, social networks or big data), while 41% do not use them at all.”

Ms Fitzpatrick continued: “The ‘digitalisation’ of the European marketplace will affect businesses of all sizes and sectors. Getting more businesses online, and increasing the numbers of innovative ICT and tech entrepreneurs is a key part of the European and national strategy, but a number of barriers to ecommerce and digital interactions are hindering online trade, including issues around the standardisation of legislation, data protection, copyrights, privacy and VAT rules. Lack of digital skills among all sectors of society and the need to bring more public services online, as well as the necessity to upgrade and improve digital infrastructure are also key issues in the debate on Europe and Ireland’s digital future.”

The EEN’s “New Digital Reality” event takes place on Wednesday 7th October at 2.00pm in the Kingsley Hotel and is open to businesses of all sizes. For more information about this event, contact Katherine@corkchamber.ie or register here
