30th September 2015
Cork City Centre Forum is pleased to announce the success of the recent Cork City Purple Flag Award Application which was submitted on the 10th July 2015 and involved the collaboration and commitment of over forty city centre stakeholders and traders working to achieve this outcome. The application which involved a recent Purple Flag Award assessment undertaken by two representatives from the Purple Flag Academy Programme focused on a review of the evening and night time offering between the hours of 5pm to 5am under the theme areas of Wellbeing, Movement, Appeal, Place and Policy, with the award symbolising a location that offers a well-managed, diverse, entertaining and enjoyable evening and night out.
Gillian Keating, Chair of the Cork City Centre Forum, stated “We are absolutely delighted with this result which has been the outcome of many months of dedicated and hard work by all involved. The award is a further jewel in the crown for Cork City and places Cork amongst a select group of cities that are celebrated for their unique and appealing evening experience. This application process has been fantastic for highlighting the great work that is ongoing and the projects that are being undertaken in and around the City; Cork is clearly going from strength to strength. The process has also provided a platform for stakeholders that would not ordinarily meet on a regular basis to work together with City Council and An Garda Síochána for the greater benefit of the City. Again, I am delighted that this result has been announced and now it’s time to promote it by celebrating this great city that we are lucky to live in and be a part of.”
Cork City Council Chief Executive, Ann Doherty, in welcoming this award for Cork City, commented that “Cork City is energised, we have the people and we have the ideas, and we are delighted with this announcement for the City, which once again recognises the culture and diversity of Cork City reaffirming what we all know, that Cork is second to none. This is a great result for the City and one that will benefit the City as a marketing and promotion tool as we share the message that Cork City is a destination not to be missed”.
Michelle O’Sullivan, Purple Flag Coordinator, Cork Chamber, added, “The successful announcement is a fantastic result for the City. The result has once again crystallised Corks place on the international and national stage as a must visit location. There is great enthusiasm and spirit here in Cork to continuously improve on our city offering and the achievement of this award is a testament to the ongoing projects and the plans for the future. The City truly has something for everyone, and the City’s offering is growing all the time.”
The Purple Flag Academy Awards ceremony will take place on November 3rd in Guildford in the UK. Here all newly awarded cities and towns from Ireland and the UK will receive their awards to take back to their respective areas.
