Cork Chamber today strongly welcomed the Government’s announcement of the capital plan and the inclusion of a number of strategic priority road projects for Cork.
According to Mr. Barrie O’Connell, President of Cork Chamber, “We are encouraged with today’s announcement that sees the upgrade of the Dunkettle interchange, the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road and the N22, Cork to Kerry road being acknowledged as nationally significant projects. Cork Chamber has long advocated the view that these projects will act as a significant catalyst and enabler of economic growth in the southern region. The number one priority road infrastructure project for Cork is undoubtedly the upgrade of the Dunkettle Interchange and early funding is a prerequisite to realise the immediate benefits which will be accrued from an upgrade of this interchange, which is primary link to all national and secondary routes in Cork. In addition, the upgrade of the N28 will be key to unlocking a number of economic prospects, whilst the N22 will open up the flow of tourism and realise the job creating potential of the South West region as recently captured in the South West Regional Action Plan for Jobs”.
“These projects, in addition to the Mallow relief road, will have a domino effect across the County, City and wider Southern region upon completion and will result in improvements in employment, attraction of FDI and reduced traffic congestion”.
Mr. O’Connell concluded by saying “While it is positive to see the Mallow relief road being progressed subject to planning, every effort must now be made to facilitate the M20 Cork to Limerick motorway, in a timely and proactive manner. This is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure for the southern region and Government must give a clear commitment to the progression of the M20 by facilitating its progression to planning stage and agree timelines for its delivery”.
