Social Media Day Cork celebrates all things social media and all things Father Ted!

27th June 2014 – 8pm

Sunday's Well Boating and Tennis Club, Mardyke, Cork.

For the fourth year running, World Social Media Day will be celebrated in Cork thanks to the work of a collective of social media devotees from the rebel city!

Taking place on June 27th, this year Social Media Day Cork is planning to pay homage to the unsung Irish hero that is Father Ted, with a ted-fest of quirky activities planned.

The small group of enthusiasts and digital media junkies from Cork come together each year to run an event which happens simultaneously worldwide to celebrate all things Social Media.

Thanks to last year’s novel digital scavenger hunt across Cork, the event was the only social media day from Europe to feature on the enormously popular site Mashable!

For such a small event it makes a huge splash in the Social Media world. Last year saw the Cork event mentioned in 30 different countries and it trended on Twitter for three days solid.

It is the sole event of its kind in Ireland to be happening this year and it’s due to be TedTastic!!

This time around, the gang are raising funds for The Hope Foundation, a Cork based charity which helps street children in India.

The event itself is an evening of all things Father Ted. Everyone is welcome to come along, whether they use Social Media or not. Tickets are available to buy in advance from www.socialmediaday.com at €21 each. Space is limited so booking early would be advised.

To celebrate the launch of Social Media Day Cork, the team were invited to Bishop’s Palace in Cork by Bishop Paul Colton. Asked if he liked Father Ted, the Bishop replied: “That would be an ecumenical matter”

Bringing a Ted twist, Social Media Day Cork will feature:

• ‘Funland’, with freak pointing, spider baby, and spinning cats!
• The 'Alternative' Lovely Girls competition.
• Social Media Bingo.
• A Real Live Bishop.
• Mrs. Doyles Tea Reception.
• Barbeque dinner for guests
• Lots of surprises
• A trip to Las Vegas (How did that get in there!)

Other highlights include:

• The Holy Stone of Clonrichert will be making an appearance Leeside which is definitely a first!
• Bishop Brennan has very generously donated his arse to be kicked on the night.

Margaret Smith, one of the organisers of the event said:
“We also have a great band lined up so start rehearsing your own song for Europe and of course ‘My Lovely Horse’ will get an airing.”

An Alternative Lovely Girls competition will be the highlight of the evening and will feature the current Miss Cork. It will be open to both men and women as we are equal opportunities lovely bottom appreciators.

While it’s not essential to come in costume, the organisers would be thrilled if people did.

All of the attractions will be “enhanced” with a Social Media aspect so even if people don’t make the actual event, they can still see what’s going on and take part online.

Ciana Aspell, Marketing Manager for the Group said:
“Cork is the only county to be running an event this year so let’s do Ireland proud!”

Michael Wall, one of the key members of the organising team, added: “We change the event completely each time and welcome everyone to join in. It is, after all, primarily a social get-together!”

Maureen Forrest, Founder and Director of the Hope Foundation said:
“HOPE is delighted to be the official charity partner of World Social Media Day, Cork. As an organisation which rescues children, restores lives and brings communities together, we are delighted to be the official charity partner. Social media continues to bring communities across the globe together on many platforms and we at HOPE see this global union as a hugely positive step- as citizens of global villages, we have shared responsibilities and need to answer calls to action.”
