At its core leadership is a relationship in which one individual influences others to achieve superior outcomes. And it is the form of this relationship that makes those who are capable of delivering advanced leadership practice stand out.

The Advancing Leadership programme is about developing the quality of the relationships in which leaders and managers engage with workplace colleagues, such as to enable them to achieve extraordinary results. The essence of such enabling relationships is that they feature a coaching approach to interpersonal engagement at their core.

The coaching process is about unlocking each person’s potential, to maximise his or her performance. And those who practice advanced leadership, deploy coaching as a fundamental practice in ensuring high-performance outcomes in their organisations.


Participants who successfully complete this programme will:

  • Understand the distinctive nature of coaching leadership as an intervention designed to enhance workplace competencies and career advancement
  • Be in a position to employ a range of coaching models designed to enhance their leadership capability
  • Understand the organisational context in which leaders deploy coaching as a means of achieving advanced performance

  • Be in a position to build powerful leadership relationships

Enabling participants to achieve a QQI Level 6 component award, the Advancing Leadership programme is designed to provide those with responsibilities for developing workplace competencies, with the skills needed to develop individual performance in others.

Its focus is on the development of progressive leadership capability in the workplace, and it is not designed as a professional training in coaching practice.

The programme creates an understanding of the organisation and workplace context within which high performance and individual career development takes place and it will provide participants with the skills, knowledge and tools that will enable them to deliver superior leadership in the workplace.

The programme provides learners with knowledge, skills and competence relating to concepts and theories associated with coaching models of practice, thereby enabling them to identify, select and apply effective relationship strategies in circumstances designed to enhance awareness and thereby progress organisation objectives.


This programme includes 5 modules:

  1. Understanding & Using the Coaching Model
  2. Questioning & Listening
  3. Building a Coaching Relationship
  4. Building Personal Effectiveness as a Coach
  5. Managing a Coaching Programme

Understand & Use a range of Coaching Models
o Reflect on and evaluate personal experiences of being coached
o Work through the steps in the coaching process
o Understand how and why individual performance can be improved through coaching 
o Use the G.R.O.W. and Co-Active models of coaching
o Set meaningful and powerful coaching goals
o Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of coaching
o Understand how individual coaching can contribute to achievement of organisational goals
o Identify organisational and operational barriers to effective coaching

Effectively use Questioning and Listening Skills
o Understand the role of questions in the coaching process
o Use different forms of questions
o Use systematic questioning structures
o Facilitate coaching models through selective questioning choices
o Use questions to re-frame and challenge
o Carry out a practical coaching session

Build Coaching Relationships
o Understand the role of the Coach
o Distinguish the coaching relationship from other helping roles
o Separate the coaching role from other organisational roles 
o Understand and build rapport 
o Gain commitment for coaching objectives
o Create the necessary safe and confidential conditions for coaching effectiveness
o Agree outcomes and how expectations will be managed
o Understand learning styles
o Align coaching and learning styles
o Understand and address the challenges in the coaching relationship

Build Personal Effectiveness as a Coach
o Understand what makes a good Coach
o Understand the importance of values and beliefs
o Challenge limiting beliefs

Have undertaken an MBTI Step I personality assessment and received associated feedback

o Build a coaching relationship with your team
o Undertake practical coaching skills demonstration
o Give positive and negative feedback
o Create empowerment and encourage positive attitudes and behaviours
o Overcome barriers to performance
o Prepare plans for individual coaching sessions and maintain records of outcomes
o Monitor the progress of individual learning and development

Manage a Coaching Programme
o Evaluate effective coaching plans
o Understand how a coaching programme can help achieve organisational goals and support organisational values
o Align individual coaching goals with team and departmental goals
o Negotiate and agree the boundaries of a coaching plan with stakeholders
o Understand the impact of a coaching programme on other areas of the organisation
o Create organisational networks to support a continuing coaching programme
o Evaluate the cost/benefit of coaching verses other learning and development methodologies
o Identify and address organisational barriers to coaching


What does it involve?

Delivered in the form of 5 modules over a three-month timescale, this programme incorporates high levels of coaching role-plays and practical relationship exercises.

Features of this newly revised programme include (a) an exploration of the Co-Active Coaching model (course book provided), (b) enhanced practical leadership relationship applications, and (c) an individual MBTI Personality assessment, designed to provide participants with significant understanding of the psychology of workplace relationships.


5 Day accredited training programme leading to a QQI Level 6 Coaching Award, 6N3087.

Assessment of this programme will be by means of (1) an Assignment Component (40% of marks) in which participants engage with real life inter-module coaching engagements with fellow participants and submit associated Coach & Client Logs and a Written Report linked to workshop elements and (2) a Practical Coaching Skills Demonstration (60% of works), which takes place during Module 5.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Cert qualification or equivalent.
Some experience in managing people and work performance an advantage.

About This Form

The purpose of this booking form is to gather profile information about participants on programmes funded by Skillnet Ireland from the National Training Fund through the Department of Education & Skills (DES). Only aggregated participant data will be reported to the DES.
