VMware Cork - Diversity Event

VMware in connection with it@cork are hosting an event on the 11th of November at which various leading champions of diversity will speak about the topic of “What is Diversity” at VMware’s Cork office in Ballincollig.

VMware is and continuously strives to be a diverse employer so they are delighted to be hosting this progressive Diversity Event. In 2014, VMware launched VMwomen, a company-wide initiative to increase the representation of women within the workplace. VMware CEO, Pat Gelsinger and business leaders from office sites around the globe are committed to the hiring, promotion, and retention of female talent within the organization. These strategic actions build on research that shows how greater diversity increases innovation, which in turn leads to better business outcomes. “It’s much more interesting to talk about what you are actually doing to change the representation of women… It’s one thing to say we have a problem. It’s another thing to say, ‘here’s what we’re doing about it.’” – Betsy Sutter, SVP of People, VMware.

The event is being held at VMware’s Training and Development Centre in Ballincollig and will address the core topic of “What is Diversity” and why it is so important in the workplace, for all employees. VMware sees diversity as more than just policies and practices. It is an integral part of who we are as a company, how we operate and how we see our future.

VMware Cork recently held an all-girls CoderDojo on their campus. A group of young primary students from Scoil Mhuire in Ballincollig spent time over 7 weeks with expert staff from VMware. By the end of the programme they had their own websites live and running and had an interest and zest for computing that they did not have beforehand. Getting girls interested in technology from a young age and throughout their education is so important. The principal of the school will speak at the event along with some of the students on the day around their experiences with the programme.

On the day there will be a panel discussion with Senior Representatives from EMC, CIT, VMware and it@Cork. Panellists will include John Dolan, Vice President, Global Support Services, VMware, David Parry Jones, Vice President, UK and Ireland Region, VMware, Karen Egan, Senior Director, Global Support Services, VMware, Sarah Abbott, Senior Director, HR, EMC, Ruth Buckley, it@Cork and Michael Loftus, Head of Faculty of Engineering and Science at CIT.

Afterwards there will be a session on unconscious bias and how it can hamper the attempts of organisations to be more (gender) diverse. Participants will gain personal insights to help them make better decisions and build stronger relationships to enhance business success.

Participants will have the opportunity to network following refreshments.
