QUARTET! A concert series by The Vanbrugh Quartet at Triskel Christchurch this Autumn.

QUARTET!, the newest project of the Vanbrugh Quartet celebrating the icons of Western Chamber Music, will be performed over a series of concerts at Triskel Christchurch this Autumn/Winter. Cork City Council and Triskel Christchurch have partnered to deliver three complimentary lunchtime concerts as well as an afternoon double bill with Francesco Turrisi & The Taquin Experiments as part of Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 2014.

For this concert the Vanbrugh Quartet has chosen music by French and American composers who were influenced by early Jazz. “Classical music will always have its place in the network of contemporary, traditional and experimental music,” says Keith Pascoe of the Vanbrugh Quartet.

Based in Cork as Resident Quartet to RTÉ from 1986-2013, and now supported by the National String Quartet Foundation, the Vanbrugh Quartet has dedicated itself to bringing string quartet music to audiences throughout Ireland. Gregory Ellis, Keith Pascoe, Simon Aspell and Christopher Marwood, as the Vanbrugh Quartet, have enjoyed a busy international career which has taken them throughout Europe, the Americas and the Far East. The current season includes visits to the UK, Italy, Sweden, Russia, and the USA, with a tour of China and Korea planned for the Autumn.

The classical string quartet repertoire has survived revolutions and natural disasters and to this day fascinates for its powerful magnetism created only by a small ensemble of two violins, viola and a cello. The 18th century Christchurch (built 1720-24), a building whose architecture is contemporary with the classical repertoire to be showcased is the ideal setting for this rapturous music. “To have a city centre venue in our home city is so valuable to us in the Vanbrugh Quartet,” says Pascoe. “It creates a connection with our audience that can be nurtured and cultivated.”
