18th August 2014
Fáilte Ireland has joined forces with the stallholders from within the English Market as well as local pubs, restaurants and cafes in a new pilot initiative that aims to improve the visitor experience in Cork as well as encouraging increased visitor spending throughout the city.
Recognising that many visitors pass through the English Market but may be unable to buy the fresh produce due to being on holiday and perhaps staying in local, catered accommodation, the tourism authority has developed “Cork’s English Market Food Experience” which highlights the venues in which the produce sold in the market can be sampled and enjoyed locally.
Speaking about the new initiative, Gary Breen from Failte Ireland said –
“The English Market is at the heart of the tourism offering here in Cork City attracting thousands of visitors a year. However we want these visitors to do more than just look and admire the wealth of produce that is available, we want to drive more business to the local pubs, restaurants and cafes which in turn benefits the stallholders.
“Food plays a big role in many visitors’ holidays and to be able to taste and not just look at what the English Market has to offer is what this initiative is all about.”
Pubs, restaurants and cafes from across the city are featured in a handy map which allows visitors to fully discover the tastes of the English Market. The premises will clearly highlight on their menus the letters ‘EM’ beside those dishes that have used produce from the market providers. The initiative will run for the month of August and if successful, Failte Ireland working with the various parties will look to further build the food experience in the future.
Visitors can pick up the map from The English Market, in the Tourist office on Grand Parade and at Cork Airport and it is also available online.
