Cork Chamber welcomes confirmation that Fota Island Resort has been selected to host the 2014 Irish Open.
Responding to the news, Cork Chamber Chief Executive, Conor Healy said “I am delighted to see the Irish Open returning to Fota. The golfing facilities at this distinguished venue are of a truly world class standard and well deserving of such an illustrious tournament”.
“I wish to congratulate Fota Island Resort and new owners, the Kang Group for their investment in securing this prestigious event as well as Official Sponsor BAM Contractors. I would like to acknowledge the dedicated support provided by Cork City and County Councils, Minister Varadkar and Minister Ring. I also wish to highlight the contribution made by Failte Ireland, who has devoted significant resources to promoting the Irish Open and enabling it to grow into one of the most important events on the European Tour”.
Mr. Healy added that “an event of this magnitude has the potential to attract thousands of national and international visitors to Cork for the event in June and the worldwide media coverage will also promote Cork as an excellent holiday and golfing destination. This will result in a boost to the local economy and support jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector.”
Finally, Cork Chamber acknowledges the immense opportunity that hosting the Irish Open presents in helping to showcase Cork as a top European sports tourism and event destination. The Chamber is committed to working with key stakeholders in the region to ensure that this opportunity is seized and leads to the development of future events of this caliber in Cork.
