25th October 2012
A heartfelt email to her colleagues at Trend Micro helped Sandra Murphy raise funds of almost €7,000 to help support her sister, Karen Murphy-O’Sullivan, who is currently waiting to go on the kidney transplant list.
The employees at Trend Micro organised a number of events from “I’m a Manager, get me out of here”, car washes, cake sales and a table quiz and ultimately raised over €3,300. As part of the “Give and Match” programme, this was matched by Trend Micro to bring the total amount fundraised to almost €7,000.
With over 3,775 people in Ireland suffering from end-stage kidney disease, the Irish Kidney Association (Cork Branch) represented by Teddy O’Neill (Chairman) gratefully accepted the cheque presented by the Trend Micro team this week.
The Irish Kidney Association provide enormous support to those suffering from kidney disease, from patient support and counselling to information, holidays homes equipped for kidney disease patients in Tralee and Tramore, advice on benefits and care assistance as well as a range of other important services that support those with the illness.
Dr. Liam Plant, Consultant Renal Physician and National Clinical Director of the HSE National Renal Office visited Trend Micro and congratulated the team of over 230 employees on their fundraising efforts. Dr. Plant explained how kidney disease is treated in Ireland, and the difficulties that sufferers face.
“The average person on haemo-dialysis will require treatment 3 times a week, needing to travel to a hospital regularly, which can mean 312 journeys a year taking in some cases 3 to 4 hours on the road per trip”, he explained.
“Over 53% of people in Ireland suffering from kidney disease have a kidney transplant, but at least 50% will wait 24 months to receive the transplant”, he added.
Sandra is not the only employee at Trend Micro to be touched by kidney disease. Derek Goggin, Global Director of Operations for Consumer Products & Services donated one of his kidney’s to his 7 year old daughter, Isabelle, last year and thankfully the transplant has been a huge success.
“For me it’s great to be part of a team that showed so much passion and enthusiasm for this cause, which is so personal to Sandra and myself. The IKA were a huge support to us throughout Isabelle’s kidney disease, and last year we stayed in the IKA house during the surgeries and relied heavily on IKA support while we were in Dublin for over 3 months” said Derek.
