2nd November 2010
The idea behind this unique concept sprang from a number of meetings between the group. They saw the difficulties facing fundraisers in these tough economic times – and they also appreciated the real benefit of business networking. ‘Connect’ plans to run a number of networking occasions annually, the first of which will be a business speed networking event, set to take place on 25th November, in aid of Cork Simon Community, at the Radisson Blu in Little Island. The fee for participation is just €20. Other than venue expenses, all the funds raised go directly to the nominated charity. The charities will always be invited to accept the donation at the end of each event.
“Registration for the first event is open to all businesses in Cork and there is no pre-requisite for membership,” noted Margot Mulcahy of MDMpr “Connect works both online and offline and you can join the group on LinkedIn (Connect, Linking Business & Charity), Facebook (Connect Ireland) and follow us on Twitter. The group vision is to also act as an umbrella for the many existing networks in Cork, enabling businesses to connect with a wider range of potential commercial opportunities and contribute to a good cause at the same time.”
The first Connect Event will commence with open networking, followed by a short presentation from Cork Simon. Before the excitement of the speed networking starts, five business cards will be drawn from the registration table, giving winners the opportunity for a one minute elevator pitch. The speed sessions will then take place for 40 minutes. Finally, everyone can relax and take part in some casual networking in the bar to follow up on business leads.
The first nominated charity, Cork Simon Community, supports many hundreds of people. Supports include 115 beds every night, access to health services, housing support, training and employment opportunities to enable people to move out of homelessness. In addition to statutory funding, Cork Simon has to fundraise €1.85m every year to continue providing these essential supports.
Thanking ‘Connect’ for nominating Cork Simon Community, Cork Simon’s Director, Colette Kelleher, said, “Our ability to respond to the needs of people who are homeless in Cork is dependent on the good will of the people of Cork, including those in the business community who share our concern and respond so generously. We’re delighted to have the support of this new group. This is a fine example of a community coming together and believing in people.” ‘Connect’ wishes to thank the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa for their support of this initiative. Cork Simon touches the lives of many people in Cork and at the commencement of the Christmas season, it is hoped that the first Connect Event will be filled to capacity for such a worthy cause.
