Urgent and Decisive Action Needed by Minister

Speaking in advance of a report to be published tomorrow by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Cork Chamber Chief Executive, Conor Healy today welcomed the planned inclusion of a recommendation that an independent team of experts be put in place to carry out an independent flood investigation into the Cork floods last November.

"Cork Chamber has been consistently calling for a specific independent enquiry into the management of water in the Lee area, following the devastating impact caused by the flooding in Cork on November last. Hopefully, Minister John Gormley TD will now give this issue the attention which it deserves following the comprehensive deliberations of the Oireachtas Committee and exercise urgent and decisive action by accepting this recommendation in full. This is vital in order to give confidence to the people of Cork that the authorities can manage flood events in Cork in the future", Mr Healy continued.

"We are in full agreement that this investigation should be prompt and that a specific time frame be set for the Independent Expert Investigation Team to complete its task", concluded Mr Healy.
