Chamber Calls For Government Commitment
Cork Chamber President, Mr Ger O'Mahoney today welcomed the recent discussions by stakeholders in the City with a view to kickstarting the Cork Docklands development and affirmed the Chamber's support for this important project which is key to our future.
According to Mr O'Mahoney, "The wider development of the Docklands project is now at a critical juncture. There is no doubt that we are operating in a challenging environment. However, the Docklands project has the potential to create high levels of job growth and lead to many economic advances nationally, but only if a commitment is secured from Government to proceed with the project,"
Mr O'Mahoney went on to say. "Cork Chamber believes that there is no viable reason why the Government should not be investing in a nationally strategic project such as Cork Docklands, which will improve the overall productive side of the economy at a time when it is most needed. In fact, Government policy states that infrastructural spending is being maintained at high levels and is being targeted at projects likely to have greatest impact in terms of attracting foreign direct investment and supporting Irish firms to compete in global markets. We now call on the Government to stop paying lip-service to stated policy and send a clear message of intent to support a project which has incalculable economic benefits".
Mr O'Mahoney concluded by saying, "If we are to prepare for the upturn, we need decisive action by Government to position the country on a sustainable footing".
