6th May 2010
Cork Chamber would like to congratulate all the teams that took part in the UCC Transition Year Enterprise Awards. Commenting on the awards, Alma Murnane, Policy & Research Executive at Cork Chamber, stated that, "the skill and imagination that has gone into these projects bodes well for the future of enterprise and innovation in Munster".
Ms Murnane went on to say that, "the Chamber is delighted to once again have the opportunity to support this excellent initiative. Fostering key business skills in the region is critically important to economic development and any opportunity for the business and academic communities to interact and nurture such skills is very welcome. As with previous years, the quality of entries into this year's competition was impressive and hopefully some of these students will continue on to study business related courses at third-level".
The Transition Year Enterprise Awards is an initiative of the UCC Commerce Faculty and examples of the projects that were entered into this competition included Mini-Companies and School Banks. The purpose of the project was to get students to write about their experience of running a company / enterprise or bank in their school with a view to encouraging them to consider studying business at degree level and subsequent career progression in this area. In addition, students were asked to submit environmentally friendly cash saving measures for business in a recession, as part of the criteria.
Anne Wallace, Student Recruitment & Liaison Officer with the College of Business and Law stated that, "this competition provides students with an opportunity to explore the business environment in an innovative way. I am delighted with the very high standard of projects received and truly grateful for the sponsorship from Cork Chamber and the Commerce Faculty at UCC".
"Foul Play" by Colaiste Mhuire in Buttevant was chosen as winner of the Award by judges from Cork Chamber and UCC. "T&D Designs" by CBS Carrick-on-Suir and "Material Girls" by Loreto Fermoy were awarded with 2nd and 3rd place prizes respectively. "Bees Knees" by Beara Community College were the runners up.
