China

In the last year, China overtook Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy in terms of GDP. The country rebounded quickly from the global economic crisis: its economy grew at a rate of 9% in 2009 and an estimated 10% in 2010. However China’s latest Five Year Plan (FYP) shows a shift in focus, as the country is determined to re-balance its’ economy, with significant focus on new and innovative technologies and low-carbon, environmental solutions to its infrastructure and fuel needs.

There is a general policy to reduce dependency on manufacturing and develop the services sector. Furthermore, the growth of the middle-class has already shown that Chinese consumers are increasingly demanding “brands” and therefore design, marketing and branding services are areas where Irish companies can provide expertise in the Chinese market.

This seminar brought you case studies from three companies in Cork that have provided solutions to the Chinese demand for expertise in some of the aforementioned areas, either securing investments from Chinese companies or participating in public contract competitions in China.

Speakers included:
• Declan O’Mahoney (CEO, Firecomms)
• Jim Connelly (Design Team Leader, M4S (A Huawei
company)
• Edward Frampton (Associate Director, Mitchell &
Associates)
• Cathy Holahan (Export Market Advisor–China,
Enterprise Ireland)
• Prof Deirdre Hunt (UCC School of Asian Studies)

Furthermore information was available about the Cork City Council Shanghai Twinning project and several EU-China Networks that can answer enquiries on behalf of Irish companies were also presented.

The seminar provided an excellent networking opportunity for companies doing business in or with China, and for those who were interested in learning more about potential opportunities in China.
