Cork Chamber Bursary Scheme

Cork Chamber Bursary Scheme 2011

In order to boost the numbers of science and engineering graduates in the Cork region, Cork Chamber’s Science, Research and Innovation Committee is asking Chamber members to consider supporting a science or engineering undergraduate in UCC or CIT through the Chamber bursary scheme. The scheme is designed to benefit the sponsoring company, the student, and the Cork region generally. Since the scheme started in 2007, eight Chamber member companies have committed to funding an undergraduate student. These include: Bord Gáis, Carbon Group, ConocoPhillips, Eli Lilly, EMC, FMC International, RPS Consulting Engineers and Millipore.

Why sponsor a student with Cork Chamber Bursary Scheme?

  • The focus on science and engineering comes at a time when the Cork region needs to maintain the flow of graduates in these disciplines into the workforce
  • Direct collaboration between Chamber member companies and the academic community of the higher education institutes in Cork strengthens existing linkages in a focused and visible manner
  • The important contribution made by sponsoring businesses is communicated widely in both the media and in Cork Chamber publications which gives great publicity
  • The scheme operates through the Access office in CIT and the UCC Plus+ office, and bursaries will be awarded to students that would usually have difficulty in accessing third-level education without financial assistance
  • By supporting a third-level student, your company can fulfils their Corporate Social Responsibility towards the Cork community

What is the commitment?

From 2011, companies are asked to contribute €2000 per year, for the duration of a 3-4 year course. There is also an option to share a bursary between 2 companies, with each company committing €1000 per annum to the bursary, for the duration of the course.
Sponsoring companies are also asked to consider facilitating a period of work experience for students during their course or as a summer placement. Offering this opportunity will also give companies an opportunity to assess potential future candidates for employment and give an insight into their course.
