EU exports to China up by 21% and imports by 5% (13/02/2012)

EU27 trade in goods with China has grown significantly over the last decade. EU27 exports to China rose continuously from 26 billion euro in 2000 to 113 bn in 2010.Despite the general decline in EU27 exports in 2009, EU27 exports to China continued to increase. EU27 imports from China rose from 75 bn in 2000 to 248 bn in 2008, then declined to 214 bn in 2009, in line with the general fall in EU27 imports, before reaching a new peak of 283 bn in 2010. As a result, the EU27 trade deficit with China increased from 49 bn in 2000 to 169 bn in 2010.

UCC would like to hear your "Impressions of Shanghai" 

UCC Confucious Institute has launched a photography and essay contest to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the its founding and 7th year of the sister-city relationship between Shanghai and Cork. The contest is open to everyone who would like to share their thoughts and views, as well as their travel, learning and living experience in Shanghai. The closing date for submissions is 31 December 2011.

 

Shanghai Centre to help Irish Firms opens (15/07/11)

An Irish centre aimed at helping Irish companies or individuals keen to get a start in the booming Chinese market opened its doors in downtown Shanghai yesterday.Treasury China Trust, the Chinese unit of Irish-based property developer Treasury Holdings, set up the centre on the second floor of the Central Plaza building, a large office and retail building which the trust owns on People’s Square in Shanghai.

European companies in China demonstrated strong overall growth in 2010, but have growing concerns over rising challenges in the regulatory environment, according to the European Chamber of Business Confidence Survey 2011, released by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.

 

Exhibition of Cork Art in Shanghai (16/05/11)

An exhibition of Cork artists Amanda Rice, Edel O'Reilly and Fiona Kelly will take place in Shanghai from 16 June - 10 July 2011.  The collection entitled "A Conversation Amongst Endpoints" was created in response to the collectives' recent residency in Platform China and explores the nature of communication, ubanization and superlative identity.  Please see attached a copy of the invite to this exhibition.

 

Business Development Opportunities in China (08/06/11)

The Enterprise Europe Network at Cork Chamber will be hosting an information and networking seminar entitled ‘China's New Agenda’ on Wednesday 15 June from 7.30am to 11.30am at the Clarion Hotel.Discussing the event, Enterprise Europe Network Manager Katherine Fitzpatrick said, “In the last year, China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy in terms of GDP. China is now placing significant focus on investing in new and innovative technologies, as well as low-carbon environmental solutions to its infrastructure and fuel needs. There is also a general policy to reduce dependency on manufacturing and develop the services sector. Furthermore, the growth of the middle-class has already shown that Chinese consumers are increasingly demanding “brands” and therefore design, marketing and branding services are also areas where Irish companies can provide expertise in the Chinese market”.

 

Irish Chamber of Commerce in China (17/03/11)

The Irish Chamber of Commerce, China (ICCC) has grown out of the Shanghai Irish Business Forum and aims to act as both a networking centre and focal point for both Irish business people in the Yangtze Delta, and those who are interested in Irish business.  With strong ties to other business groups across Asia, close interaction with the Irish semi state bodies and other countries' Chambers in China, the ICCC aims to provide a comprehensive source of information, and a centre point where the Irish business community in Shanghai can meet, exchange ideas and share business opportunities. 

 

Chamber strengthens Business Links in Hangzhou and Shanghai (09/03/11)

Building on the success of previous missions since the twinning of Cork and Shanghai in 2005, Cork Chamber representatives visited the cities of Hangzhou and Shanghai to further strengthen business ties between the two regions and make contacts that will be of mutual benefit to both Irish and Chinese companies. "View China Objectively, Achieve Common Development Cooperatively" (15/12/10)

The School of Asian Studies UCC presents the next lecture in their Ambassadors’ Lecture Series with the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Liu Biwei. As we enter the second decade of the 21st century it is becoming ever more apparent that this will be the Asian century, as the 19th was the British and the 20th was the American. In this series the ambassadors to Ireland of leading Asian countries will explore what Ireland means to their respective governments, how our relationship has evolved and what the new realities of Ireland's economic situation mean for its relationship with Asia.  The Chinese Ambassador to Ireland will be speaking on Wednesday 15th December at 4pm in the Council Room (UCC). All are welcome to attend. 

 

Commission opens gateway to China for European small and medium size enterprises (08/11/10)

Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, has launched the Centre for European Union Small and Medium Enterprises (EU SME Centre) in Beijing on 5 November. Funded by the European Commission, this new venture will provide information, advice, training and matchmaking opportunities for European SMEs wishing to export to or invest in the Chinese market.

 

CIT strengthens its Chinese Links (18/09/10)

“Cork Institute of Technology is seeking to explore new and consolidate existing relationships with Universities in Shanghai, Dalian, Wuhan and Jingzhou. Particular areas of interest are in Art & Design, where CIT Crawford College of Art & Design wishes to establish connections with the College of Fine Art at the University of Shanghai, with a view to bringing the work of renowned glass artist Prof. XiaoWei Zhuang and his students to exhibit in the CCAD’s new exhibition space at Wandesford Quay Gallery. Cork Chamber Signs Business Partnership in Hangzhou (10/09/10)

Cork Chamber President Ger O’Mahoney today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on behalf of Cork Chamber with the Hangzhou Chamber of Commerce. Hangzhou is the capital city of Zhejiang, one of China’s most developed provinces. It is also the 2nd largest city of the Yangtze River Delta and a popular tourist destination located two hours from Shanghai city.

 

Cork takes on China (06/09/10)

President of UCC meets UCC students in China (16/06/10)

President Murphy's meeting with UCC Chinese Studies students who are currently studying at Shanghai University.The meeting took place on Wednesday 16 June at a reception hosted by the Consul General of Ireland in Shanghai, Conor O Riordan and his wife to mark the occasion of the visit to Shanghai by The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese and Dr Martin McAleese.

 

CIT honours Chinese Laureate (08/05/10)

On Friday 7th May, Dr Brendan Murphy, President, CIT, hosted at a reception to honour Ms Xiao Fang Zhang, CIT's PhD Student, who was a recipient of a European Laureate for Innovation for her work on the development of a Bubble Extractor for Intravenous Infusion at Innovact 2010. The Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency, Liu Biwei, was present to see his countrywoman honoured. Ms Xiao, from Dalian City in China, has been a student at CIT since 2004 and graduated with a BEng Honours in Mechanical Engineering.

 

Cork city listed as one of the top ten tourist cities to visit globally by Yahoo China

Cork city has been listed by Yahoo China as one of the top ten tourist cities to visit globally in 2010. Cork has achieved ranking in the Yahoo China top 10 listing following Istanbul and Kyoto and ahead of Vancouver and Singapore. The China accolade comes on foot of the Lonely Planet tourist guide listing earlier this year which awarded Cork the number 3 position in their league of World Cities to visit in 2010.

 

Chinese Government Award (01/04/10)

Ms Fengjun Shang, a UCC PhD student in Analytical Chemistry under the supervision of Professor Jeremy D. Glennon, Department of Chemistry has received the highly-prestigious Chinese Government Award. The Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad, which includes a certificate and a $5000 prize, recognizes outstanding Chinese students undertaking full-time PhD research abroad.

 

Cork & UCC celebrate the Chinese Year of the Tiger (16/02/10)

2010 is the Year of the Tiger according to Chinese tradition and to usher in the New Year, “Peacock and Swan” the Chinese New Year celebration in Cork will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, February 17th at 6pm in the City Hall, Cork. The event is being jointly organised by Cork City Council, UCC’s International Education Office, Chinese Students’ Union, School of Asian Studies and Confucius Institute, in close co-operation with Shanghai University.

 

The 4th World Confucius Institute Conference (06/01/10)

UCC's Confucius Institute (CI) was represented by a delegation at the 4th World Confucius Institute Conference in Beijing on December 11th 2009. The aim of the conference was to show teaching achievements of Confucius Institutes around the world and build up a platform for experience exchange.
